Dog Petting – The Right And The Wrong Way To Do It

doggApproach your dog in the right way and it will love you even more but pet it the wrong away and you will dent its confidence and perhaps even agitate it. In this article, I’ll tell you the correct way to pet your dog.

It sounds crazy but there really are good and bad ways to show your affection to your dog. In fact, there is even one method of petting that is very popular and is actually wrong.

This is when people pet their dog by putting their hand on top of the dog’s head. Have you ever noticed how your dog will cringe when people do this? Your dog will put its ears back and blink when this happens. Try petting a person on the head like your friend – most living creatures do not respond well to having a hand placed on top of the head.

A better way for you to show your dog how much you love him or her is to stroke its chest. This is the part of the body that is projected to the front when the dog is on all four legs, just below the neck. Dogs love it when you stroke their chest and neck, no matter what the breed.

Your dog will also love it when you stroke it whilst it is laying beside you. Stroke from the back of the neck and down to the legs. Don’t pull on the fur or pull at the tail – he or she will not like this. Instead, just run your fingers through the fur. This is very similar to grooming which dogs do to each other in the wild.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can even try putting your teeth through the dogs fur! I don’t recommend it but I did try it once to see if my dog would like it and it did! It’s not worth repeating though due to the fur I nearly swallowed.
